After all that you accomplished, what drives you to continue running?

I am driven by a relentless passion to test myself and push the boundaries of what is possible.


How do you motivate yourself on days when you don't feel like running?

I am lucky in that I don't have a lot of days where I am feeling unmotivated but when I do I think about all the amazing things I am trying to accomplish and that I am so fortunate to get to do these things. Also that I need to be ready both mentally and physically and I just get out there and do it.


On average, how many times and miles do you run a month?

I would say I average about 350 to 400 miles per month.


What's the weirdest or funniest thing that ever happened to you while running?

I have so many crazy stories from running. I think one of the strangest is that I tripped and fell and cracked my face open and broke some teeth. It was day after Halloween and I had blood streaming down my face on my jacket and hands and not one person thought it was odd/strange/etc. because they thought it was a costume. I got up and ran to the emergency room at Georgetown hospital and they took a look at my broken tooth and asked “does it always look like that?” That made me laugh.


What are your favorite types of fuel for running and why?

I am lucky to have a ton of really good support for food and fuel. Some of my favorites for running are Vitargo, Big Spoon Roasters and Beard Brothers. Post run I love Sweetgreen salads and Relay Foods for groceries.


What's your favorite cheat food & drink?

I don't really have a favorite cheat food as I try to eat really well balanced and that means some stuff that might not be "healthy" all the time but what my body is craving. I guess the thing I love the most that would be considered a "cheat" food would be "General Taos" from Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant, it is so darn good.


Do you like ice baths? Why or why not?

I like ice baths but I don't take them that much because they take too long to get all set up. I think if I had the ability to just have an ice bath without all the set up and clean up I would. I really enjoy soaking my legs in a river but that is tough around Washington, DC. But love doing that at races in the Mountains.


What's the most important tip you like to give new runners?

I think the most useful tip I can share is to be consistent. It is much better to run everyday than to run a gazillion miles one day and none the next.


What is your favorite running accomplishment so far?

I have been super amazed by getting to do a lot of super cool things so far and they are all very special to me. If I had to narrow it down, I think setting a Guinness World Record with Pierce in the jog stroller and trying with Grant were really neat as we got to share that experience and we can look back at that years from now and know we did it together. I hope that as a family we can have many more of these experiences.
