After all that you accomplished, what drives you to continue running?
Honestly, I don't feel as if I've accomplished all that much. I still feel as if there is so much left for me to do in this sport and that's my number one driving factor. I want to see how fast and how far I can go. I like to push myself. It's all about defying limitations.
How do you motivate yourself on days when you don't feel like running?
On days when I don't feel like running, and there are plenty; a few things motivate me. I don't believe in wasting my own time. If I've made a commitment, if I've set out to do something, I'm going to do it. I sacrificed a lot for this sport, especially in this first year out of college. When I don't feel like running I remember that I moved across the country for this opportunity and I always remember that someone else can be outworking me at any given moment.
On average, how many times and miles do you run a month?
Being a 400 meter hurdler, I don't chart mileage but I train 6 days a week on the track and 3 to 4 days a week in the weight room.
What's the weirdest or funniest thing that ever happened to you while running?
When I was in high school we used to have to go on 'town runs' a couple days a week. I grew up in New Hampshire, which is known for cold, harsh winters. One day during the indoor track season, I was running with one of my teammates and as we approached a set of lights I slipped on ice and landed flat on my back in the snow in front of a line of cars stopped at a red light. Super embarrassing.
What are your favorite types of fuel for running and why?
I don't like to eat anything before training, but I love the Locker Room Latte - Recovery Strategy protein by GenEthix after a hard workout or before a tough weight session. It's really light on my stomach and the flavor is amazing.
What's your favorite cheat food & drink?
I actually have a top 5 list of favorite foods but not in any particular order. They are blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip cookies, Boardwalk fries, the greasiest pizza and corn dogs.
Do you like ice baths? Why or why not?
I don't like ice baths. I always feel great after taking one but I absolutely dread getting in. I avoid them as much as possible.
What's the most important tip you like to give new runners?
Be open. Be patient.
What is your favorite running accomplishment so far?
Looking back, I had a lot of great accomplishments while I was at Wheaton but I think my favorite accomplishment to date is my personal best from this year. I took nearly 2 seconds off of my previous best in the 400 meter hurdles and it was just such a relief. That was the push I needed to really believe that I could take on the professional realm of track & field.
